The climate is perfect, the scenery divine. Pass through such diverse countryside from the modern cities with their skyscrapers and commerce, through small Dutch gabled towns in the wine growing regions, where life seems to tick by at a much slower rate than the rest of the world. Drive past farms and vineyards to magnificent mountain ranges or try the Garden Route from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth and see the blue of the Atlantic Ocean as it blends with the hue of the Indian.

A favourite route for most tourists to South Africa, is here on the Garden Route, stopping for a night or two along the way at superb lodges, where the hospitality, friendliness and service is second to none.

A trip to Cape Horn is not to be missed, where the walk up to the viewing platforms, is rewarded by exhilarating views. At the end of the Garden Route, just before Port Elizabeth, stop at the Addo Elephant Park or Shamwari for a safari.

North east of Johannesburg is Sun City, fondly known as Fun City, a man made oasis in the bush, which, although not one of the modern wonders of the world, should be! Surrounded by Pilansberg National Park, where the Big Five, Lion, Elephant, Rhino, Hippo and Leopard can be spotted. Five hotels, from the 5* Palace to the budget Cabanas sit around the "beach" complete with a wave machine and chutes. There is also a casino here.

Cape Town offers such diverse activities that you could stay within the confines of the city without journeying further. Nestled between the glittering Atlantic Ocean and the dominant Table Mountain, Cape Town has grown from a small port to a world class city offering many attractions for the discerning traveller. No trip here would be complete without taking the cable car to the mountain top and viewing the magnificent scenery and watching the small boats and ocean going liners come and go, and passing by Robben Island, which held Nelson Mandela there in its famous prison, which, has itself, become a tourist attraction.

Visit the Botanical Gardens of Constansia or the wine growing towns of Paarl and Stellenboch, to sample their wares.

The Waterfront on the Victoria and Alfred marina boasts many shops and restaurants where you can eat a meal al fresco and watch the seals play in the bay and glorious sunsets on the glittering sea.

A trip to South Africa is not described as a once in a lifetime holiday, because, with the Rand being so favourably matched against the pound, it is so easily affordable.
